the New Black is a Netflix drama-comedy series that ran from 2013 to 2019, directed by Jenji Kohan and inspired by the Piper Kerman memoir, Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison. It follows the story of affluent white woman Piper Chapman, whose quiet, privelleged life is interrupted when she is namedropped in court by Alex Vause, her ex fellow drug mule and lesbian affair, who until now had become a skeleton in her closet, with Piper about to settle down with her fiance, Larry Bloom. She is sentenced to 15 months in minimum security prison, specifically the same one Alex is held in and this marks the begining of what will be a long, complex series of intertwined dramatic events. The show is known predominantly for humanising prisoners, but also for the large amount of represenation present in it, and its tackling of a wide variety of social issues, all whilst being extremely entertaining and not overbearing in its delivery of political messages.
